hurray - i've been attacked

awhile back i posted about frances & donny swaggart condemning the emergent movement and youth specialties. a guy named scott baker commented on my entry saying ...
You ought to be ashamed! You talk about love? Being a Christian? I don't get it?
Are you even saved? If you are not you will get angry with me.
Did you know gossiping is a sin? The Bible says it is the same as witch craft.
In defense of Brother and Sister Swaggart and God, everything they are teaching comes from the Bible. Have you ever read it?
You make fun of these good people. And that's not right!
Would love an opportunity to talk with you. My name is Rev. Scott Baker and I am the pastor of Heavens Harmony Family Worship Center in Gastonia, NC.
Please call me xxx-xxx-xxxx(i've x'd out the number to protect him from crank calls). Call me please!

so i called him. we discussed the whole thing and i thought we left understanding each other though not agreeing with each other. apparently i was wrong. scott has commented back on my blog twice tearing into me and today i found out through technorati that he has posted on his blog about me without even letting me know. here's part of his post.
I Copied this from a ministers (sic) Blog. I was shocked to say the least. This minister has been in contact with me by phone, not to clear things up, but because he "thought it would be interesting". This man wrote the following below and there are comments from other people. This should make every born again Christian angry, with a rightious (sic) anger. This is a direct attack on the body of Christ
Please take notice again this is a preacher! He says "I laugh my rear end off" he, makes a mocery (sic) of other people, he tares (sic) down Brother and Sister Swaggart for supposadly (sic) doing the same thing. It's ok for him to do it but not the Swaggarts!
There is a link to his blog. check it out, research it well. You will find this man is into astology (sic), and other things of the devil. My purpose for reporting this to you as well as the Swaggarts reporting to you on things of this nature is to sound an alarm! To warn you of the dangers of people who try to decieve (sic) you on purpose. I have listed several comments on his blog and he only responded to one. I asked him if he was saved and HE NEVER ANSWERED THAT QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i didn't even know that i was into astology. in fact, i'm not even sure i know what astology is - but i'm sure my wife wouldn't want me being involved within it. i tried to comment back on scott's blog but he hasn't approved it yet.

thankfully scott says he wants to help me so hopefully soon i will be on the straight and narrow again. i'm sure after he instructs me i will no longer agree within anything that the emergent movement, youth specialties, ric warren, bill hybels, billy graham, or anyone else whose last name isn't connected with the swaggart ministries. oh happy day.

btw, if you would like scott will sell you an expositor's bible for $125 (with jimmy swaggart's words in red - something seems wrong with that. i just can't seem to put my finger on it ... jimmy's words in red? hmmmm)

  • He needs a dictionary, not an expositor's bible.

Well, when you repent, let me know.

And you are into astology...astology is the study of chaffing others in the ...well, uh...you know...asts.

  • Robert, UNBELIEVABLE!!This guys name was brought up at our Monday night meetings!!

By Blogger sharon, at Sunday, January 01, 2006 2:10:00 PM

  • okay. now you're just joking.

i'm assuming and hoping that scott will read this so i should probably explain what the monday night meetings are. sharon is on our pastor search committee ((our church is presently without a senior pastor) and the meeting she is talking about is their weekly meeting to pray and search for a new pastor. who knows this means you could eventually be my boss. ;)

  • Astology? Hmmm...that explains the asherah pole you've been building in the backyard. It all makes sense now.
    Your adoring wife

  • scott, i got to tell you, as the one on the receiving side of your statements they definitely sound like an attack to me. i find it hard to believe that you are merely attacking my teaching because you don't know anything about my teaching. all you really know is that i'm not a big fan of the swaggarts. apparently that is all you really need to know to start the attack.

secondly, it's "astRology" not "astology". your "sign" is a part of every blogger profile. you can't turn it off. if you want people to be able to look at your profile then blogger will figure out and display your astrological sign. i didn't put it on the page (because i don't believe in that stuff). if you have a profile page then there is an astrological sign on it too.

third, the curse word you are talking about is on someone else's website - not mine. in the post that you are questioning i said "i am going to kick into my best gallagher imitation" which is a phrase that most people would understand is a way of saying that i am going to smash something. gallagher was a 1980s comedian whose act consisted of taking a very large mallet and smashing things with it. i didn't imitate gallagher by saying a curse word. i imitated him by smashing some things with a very large mallet. that was the whole point off that post. i'm not sure that i have a responsibility to answer for someone else cussing.

fourth, you are right i am a smartelick. i enjoy laughing with the best of them. while i am a smartelick i very rarely "laugh at people." yet i have no problem laughing at something a person does that is stupid. when i heard frances swaggart tearing into the emergent movement because she said it had no problem being friends with none CHRISTians that immediately stood out at something stupid that should be laughed at.

scott i don't really think that i'll call you again. i tried talking with you once and all that came of it was you trashing me on your blog that you didn't even link to in your comments on my blog (i only found out about it by technorati). you say that you "don't play games" - well maybe you should. then you might lighten up a little see the joyful CHRIST and realize that preaching the good news is much more than trying to point out how everyone else is wrong. i quote the tagline of your blog "exposing false teachings in the church such as "The Purpose Driven Life", The Emergent Church, The Word of Faith Movement, Seeker Sencitive (sic) Movement. How the church is being "Decieved (sic) on Purpose" and Rick Warren paves the way for the Anichrist (sic)." i really though that JESUS said the good news was about the kingdom of GOD not about saying that everyone else who claims to be a follower of HIM is wrong.

by the way. i thought you would want to know that posting someone else's article as though it were you own is called plagiarism and is against the law. your post on december 26article by ken silva from apprising ministries. if you are going to post someone else's article you really need to ask their permission, give them written credit, and then link to them in your post.

By Blogger robert terrell, at Sunday, January 01, 2006 10:17:00 PM

  • sorry about that last paragraph not working right. it's supposed to say that you post on december 26 is actually an article by ken silva from apprising ministries. if you are going to post someone else's article you really need to ask their permission, give them written credit, and then link to them in your post.

  • Well - I would still suggest a dictionary AND a sense of humor.

As far as a different path - those of us in youth ministry have a saying...

"I'm going to lead you down the path that rocks..."

My favorite line from Emperor's New Groove.

  • Scott reminds me of someone close to me that received their preacher's license by mail. For years afterwards, he was out to prove all the preachers wrong, leaving church after church. That seems like a sad walk. I prefer to love God with all of heart and to love my neighbors. I can't count the # of times you have laughed at me, but as I recall, it is usually after I laugh at myself!!

By Blogger sharon, at Monday, January 02, 2006 5:02:00 AM

  • Robert, don't sweat it.

Scott, just don't talk/type, you know? Everytime you've done it to this point just digs your hole ever deeper.

By Blogger Derek, at Monday, January 02, 2006 1:04:00 PM

  • thanks to seeing that grant didn't have an astrological sign on his blogger profile i have finally figured out how to remove the astrological sign from my profile - i deleted my birthday from my profile. unfortunately this means you will no longer be able to see my birthdate and thereby know when to send me random gifts. still it's worth it to remove the astrological sign from my profile (the one that i didn't even put up there). thanks to all of you who have been lifting me up in prayer. my spiritual life is already doing better.

scott, this is just meant to be light-hearted sarcasm. it's a joke.

By Blogger robert terrell, at Monday, January 02, 2006 2:46:00 PM

  • Scott,
I didn't mean to make it sound like you were ordained through the mail or that you move churches. You just remind me of this person, and only through what I've read on this blog. I guess I only am seeing your judgemental side...that's what reminds me of him. And all and all, he is a good person. And maybe you are a loving person, you just don't show it while blogging on this sight. Not that you do, but this person also had a lot of problems with ulcers. And not that your a child, but when my children were toddlers and they would have grouchy days, I would say "come here and let me squeeze all those grouchy bugs out" and give them just the biggest hugs. Not to be ugly, but I've been praying that God hugs you whenever you blog and lets you see the good in people. Blessed is the peacemaker.

  • hey scott, glad you responded.

1)i did not place the astrological sign on my page and therefore you are right you do owe me an apology. i'll take it at anytime.

2)i understand you wouldn't do it - i heard a wise guy once say "you did not call me GOD did. so i don't need you giving me advice. thanks." i'll let that me my answer.

3)i did not say that i laugh with people. i said i laugh at the stupid things people do (myself included). i did not mean to offend any of the 17 people who agreed with you. if you will send me their email addresses or physical addresses i will personally write them and apologize for offending there sensibilities. my goal was and is for people to look at frances swaggart's comment of the emergent church and youth specialties being evil because they love people and are friends with people who are not believers in JESUS CHRIST - my goal is for people to look at that statement and think "well that's dumb. why on earth would anyone say that." humor is my way of drawing attention to the stupidity of that statement. don't worry i use the same humor to draw attention to my own stupid statements.

3 (sic))where does ric warren make the quote you attributed to him? the one that says

"There is nothing done in the name of Christ that has been more counter productive to the evangelism enterprise ,than the often crude, un couth, and (sic) un christian stratagy (sic) of attempting to make people aware of their lost and sinful condition".

i'm just wondering because this is apparently originally a robert schuller quote from the march 18, 1985 issue of time magazine. what publication and page number does ric warren say this on? i'm just wondering because to wrongly attribute a "negative" comment to someone is just plain wrong in my opinion.

p.s. scott i can't find your church in the gastonia yellow/white pages. is there a link where i could look up some information on your church? you can look up all you want on mine here. its parkview baptist church in baton rouge, louisiana.

  • I thought you had the astrological sign up for the ministry you have to local psychics. My bad...

My only serious comment to all of this is the statement 'God called me, i don't need your advice.'

And I guess I'm talking more to Robert that scott, because I want a dialogue, not an argument.

Where does the confirmation of the call from the community come in? That is the charge to Timothy from Paul - don't be quick to lay hands - and do it in community with these qualifications for all to evaluate.

It's a fairly significant question for the emergent church because of the value we place on community. A biblical value, I would add.

If it is impossible to walk with Christ without community - is it possible to be called without community?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Tuesday, January 03, 2006 6:57:00 AM

  • i actually agree with you grant. i was just quoting scott on the "i don't need your advice" part because i found it ironic that he was telling derek not to give him advice and then giving me advice in the exact same post. my comment was meant sarcastically.

i personally believe the idea of community is extremely important within the concept of a ministerial call because of the example of the church in antioch (acts 13:1-3). paul and barnabas received their call to missions as a part of a church body that was praying and seeking GOD's will. i find it significant that they did not receive it privately and then come "report" it to the church.

i guess i let my sense of irony take over too much.

By Blogger robert terrell, at Tuesday, January 03, 2006 7:10:00 AM

  • scott, thanks for calling me smart. i appreciate the compliment.

technically you never actually apologized for accusing me of placing astrology in my blog. your statement was "If I am wrong then I will admit it cause it is the right thing to do. If you did not put the astrology thing on your bolg then I owe you an apology." that's not really apologizing. that's just admitting that you owe me one. "i'm sorry for falsely accusing you" or "i apologize for saying things about you that are untrue" those are apologies.

i guess you're right about no one on this post having said from the bible that you are wrong. so i'll start. exodus 20:16 says that you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor and yet you have come on my blog and accused me of practicing astrology (as well as other things) and you were proved wrong. you also decided to attribute a quote to ric warren that i proved in about five minutes research came from robert schuller. both of these are examples of false witness. the bible says that you should not lie about people. GOD takes this very seriously. as a brother in CHRIST (because i am assuming that JESUS CHRIST is your LORD - though i can't know for sure) i charge you to follow GOD and stop lying about people.

as for the other stuff you have posted i have to admit that it's really hard for me to believe you concerning those details when you have already lied about both me and ric warren on the two statements i mentioned above. when i see more truthful statements from you maybe i will be interested enough to look into your "research".

i do find it interesting that you would passive/aggressively worry that i would delete you comment when i have left everyone of your comments up on my blog. i figure any sensible person who reads these comments will see exactly who you are.

sorry to hear you won't be coming around anymore.

btw, all of the above was written with my tongue firmly in my cheek.

By Blogger robert terrell, at Tuesday, January 03, 2006 6:40:00 PM

  • hey derek, i haven't heard from you in awhile. every now and then i sure do miss the youth specialties forum. i've heard there is a new one but i haven't gone by it.

don't worry about me sweating. i just figure if he's going to post a comment i should respond. seems only polite.

btw, congrats on your engagement to katie. that's wonderful.

  • u know...

ive posted some weird stuff in my blogging lifetime, but noone's been so concerned about my soul that they've personally accused, attacked, emailed, phoned, sent certified mail, prayed for me in this way...

    i'm kind of dissapointed.

  • never mind scott, i have received your email. you sent it to lee, our computer guy. he has since forwarded it to me. hopefully by now you have received my response. if you wish to correspond further you can respond via the address i used to reply to your email or use the address in the above comment. sending an email to the computer guy (as nice as he is) is not the fastest way of getting me an email.
